Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday proposed that a meeting of opposition political parties should be held after Eidul Fitr to build consensus on appointment of four new members of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
After holding a telephonic conversation with opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, senior PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that they exchanged views on appointment of new members of the ECP.
"Consensus among opposition parties on names of ECP members is very important as we want the commission should undertake its job without any fear and favour which can only be possible when we'll ensure transparency in appointment of ECP members," he added.
Qureshi said that he proposed to opposition leader to convene a meeting of all opposition parties in Islamabad after Eidul Fitr, adding Khursheed Shah denied of exchanging any list of names about the proposed ECP members with Ishaq Dar.
He stressed the need to expedite efforts to strengthen the ECP to ensure free and fair elections in the country, saying if we have an independent ECP, it will help in strengthening the democracy in the country.
He said that appointment of ECP members should be completed as soon as possible, saying any delay in the appointment of ECP members will further delay the by-elections, as well as the last phase of local government elections in some parts of the country.
The PTI leader said that with the retirement of ECP members, three petitions against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were pending. "The petitions against the prime minister should be taken up for hearing after the appointment of its members and there should be no delay in this regard at all costs," he added.
