ECP allowed to issue new LB polls schedule in Sindh, Punjab

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan has allowed Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to change local bodies election schedule in Sindh and Punjab.

This was stated by Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmed outside the SC here Monday. He said new date would be issued after amendment in law, rules and legislation.

Following the SC orders, the scheduled issued earlier for LB elections has been annulled, he said.

LB polls were scheduled on January 18 and 30 in Sindh and Punjab, respectively. ECP had moved SC for change in polls schedule.

Ishtiaq Ahmed further said delimitation would be carried out as per the court orders.

He was optimistic that all such process would be completed soon and the LB polls be held at the earliest.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had proposed new dates for holding Local Bodies (LB) polls before the Supreme Court.

During proceedings of the delimitations case, the ECP had stated that LB elections in Punjab and Sindh should be delayed as time was required for the printing of ballot papers. The ECP recommended that LB polls in Sindh should be held on February 23 and in Punjab on March 13.
