NRO case: SC hopes new PM will write Swiss letter

The court ordered Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to submit a written response to the court on whether or not he will write a letter to the Swiss authorities by July 12.

The three-member bench comprising Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, and Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh heared the case.

During the last two hearings of the NRO case on May 3 and April 16, the bench abstained from passing any order in the case of appointment of several NRO beneficiaries to public offices.

A judicial notice was also expected to be served upon the new premier to implement the directives contained in paragraphs 177 and 178 of the NRO judgement, regarding writing a letter to Swiss authorities.

An application filed in Supreme Court Tuesday pleaded the court to direct newly-appointed Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to write a letter to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari. The petitioner also urged the court to bar Raja Pervaiz Ashraf from discharging his official duties "unless he writes the letter to Swiss authorities."

Earlier, on June 19 the hearing of NRO case had been adjourned on the request of Aitzaz Ahsan due to contempt of court case against former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

It is worth mentioning that apex court has declared ex PM Gilani as disqualified in same case.

Court had issued notices to Attorney General Irfan Qadir, Deputy Attorney General, Secretary Establishment Division Nargis Sethi, Secretary Law Yasmin Abbasi, Secretary interior Siddique Akbar, D.G FIA, Chairman NAB Faseeh Bukhari and other concerned lawyers and respondents of NRO case.
