ECP issues notice of Gilani’s disqualification

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued notification to disqualify Yusuf Raza Gilani as Member National Assembly (MNA) of Pakistan with effect from April 26, 2012.

The notification issued by the ECP has also rescinded, as a consequence of disqualification, the notification of the ECP dated March 01, 2008 to the extent of declaring him as returned candidate from National Assembly constituency NA-151 Multan-IV.

Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Shakirullah Jan convened an emergency meeting of the Commission to dispense with the constitutional duties in view of the Supreme Court decision regarding disqualification of Yusuf Raza Gilani as Prime Minister and Member National Assembly.

Members of the Commission, Justice (r) Riaz Kiyani, Justice (r) Shahzad Akbar Khan and Justice (r) Fazal-ur-Rehman were also present at the meeting. Member ECP Justice (r) Muhammad Roshan Essani was at his hometown and already on a leave.

During the meeting, the Commission considered the Supreme Court order and other connected matters at length and had taken the decision of issuing the notification.

The disqualification notification issued by the ECP stated, "consequent upon disqualification of Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani from being a member of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) by the Supreme Court of Pakistan vide order dated June 19, 2012 passed in constitution petition No. 40/2012 (Muhammad Azhar Siddique vs Federation of Pakistan etc) and other connected matters in terms of Article 63(1)(g) of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan and from the date and time of pronouncement of the judgment of the Supreme Court dated April 26,2012, the Election Commission of Pakistan hereby issues notification of disqualification of Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani as Member National Assembly of Pakistan with effect from April 26, 2012 and in consequence thereof the Notification No. F.2(4)/2008 of March 01, 2008 to the extent of declaring him as returned candidate from National Assembly constituency NA-151 Multan-IV stands rescinded with effect from April 26, 2012."
