Supreme Court takes judicial notice of TV programs

As per the orders, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) submitted all the material related to a show aired on a private TV channel, in which two anchorpersons (planted) interviewed Malik Riaz.

During the meeting, Supreme Court Registrar Faqir Hussain briefed the meeting about the controversial TV interview of Malik Riaz Hussain, the main character of country’s one of the biggest ever scandals.

An unedited version of TV interview was also played in the meeting upon which CJ remarked that media programs ridicule the judiciary everyday, there were several attempts of undermine the judiciary which had been unearthed. Now this program showed that planted questions were asked during the interview.

Chief Justice questioned Chairman PEMRA, Abdul Jabbar regarding the media regulations to stop contemptuous programmes. The PEMRA chairman replied saying that if the court takes a decision, then PEMRA can initiate proceedings according to the law.

An emergent full court meeting has been called against the backdrop of serious allegations levelled by property tycoon Malik Riaz against the family of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The meeting was attended by all 17 judges of the Supreme Court.
