The 27 year old gave a distinctive performance in the two Twenty20 matches earlier this week.
Sohail Tanvir was only brought in for the T20 squad but after opening batsmen Nasir Jamshed dropped out of the series due to a finger injury Tanvir was called upon by the team managers.
According to Chief selector Iqbal Qasim, the left-arm swing bowler has a comendable record against the Sri Lankan team, and will prove to be an asset in Pakistan's one day squad.
"In view of the request from the team management and keeping in consideration the current form of Tanvir, the selection committee has decided that he may be retained for the one-day series in Sri Lanka," Qasim said in a Pakistan Cricket Board statement.
It should be noted that Sohail Tanvir was chosen over an in-form opener Ahmed Shehzad who performed exceptionally well in the Bangladesh Premiere League earlier this year and Pakistan's former captain, veteran Shoaib Malik.  Sohail Tanvir has 55 wickets in 43 one-day games and has an excellent record against Sri Lanka.
The one day series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka starts from Thursday June 7 in Pallekele Stadium.
