The attack occurred when the family was leaving Khyber Agency area to find a safer location.

According to reports, a mortar shell was fired from an unknown location, targeting the car and its passengers.

Speculating a big scale military operation, the local residents were urged to move out of the area and relocate to a safer place, the four children and the woman were among those people when a mortar shell struck their car killing the four children and injuring the woman gravely.

It should be noted that the security forces had already issued a deadline to evacuate the Khyber Agency and its surrounding areas, by May 10.
