Report: Bannu Jail inmates had access to cellphones, Facebook

After the escape of those prisoners from Bannu Jail the Commissioner Bannu, IG Jails, Deputy Superintendent Jail Bannu and DIG police were removed from their designations on Monday.

A good number of inmates who fled; returned voluntarily, revealing details of the incident and that the inmates of Bannu Jail had access to cellphones and social networking sites and blogs like Facebook, while serving their terms inside the jail.

It is highly speculated that this mass jail break was arranged in order to free Adnan Rashid, the master mind who was on death row after being charged and found guilty of attempting to assassinate the former president and military chief of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, in 2003.

Adnan Rashid was reported to have access to mobile phones inside death row cells after his conviction.

Besides Rashid, other inmates were also reported to have access to various social networking sites and blogs from inside the prison while also keeping contact VIA SMS  with media reporters and journalists.

The federal government's neglect of the request to install signal jammers inside the prison has lead to the biggest jail break in the history of Pakistan. Reports suggest that the Home Secretary KP had requested for a NOC to install jammers in the prison after a local newspaper reported that inmates have been using cellphones inside the jail, but the request was ignored.

A special five-member committee has been set up by Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti. The committee will complete and submit its inquiry report within 15 days.
