Pakistani film ‘Saving Face’ likely to get Oscar

Among the nominees to be honoured at today’s night of Oscar movie magic, is a new documentary short film, “Saving Face.” Saving Face follows a plastic surgeon who travels to Pakistan to treat girls and women who have suffered acid attacks.

Saving Face is Pakistan’s first nomination at the 84th Academy Awards, held annually in Los Angeles, California.

“The film also emerges as a face-saver for Pakistan, amid growing negative perceptions about the country worldwide,” The Washington Times said ahead Sunday’s ceremony, which will be hosted by actor comedian Billy Crystal.

The film was directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Daniel Junge. The documentary-makers hoped to debunk the taboos and assumptions about masculinity surrounding the issue. For instance, it is often believed that women must have done something to deserve the attacks.

“We wanted men to know they think it is manly to throw acid, but in fact it was the most unmanly thing to do,” Ms. Obaid-Chinoy told.
