GB protest: Govt announces compensation for victims

Earlier on Thursday, Two men was killed and five others injured when police opened fire at the affectees of Attababad Lake on the arrival of Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan on thursady, a report said.

According to officials, the protesters torched a police station, deputy commissioner’s house, a government rest-house and a police van. Reports reaching here said that Deputy Superintendent of Police Babar was among the injured.

The clash took place after a local bank refused to pay compensation money to the affected people because of shortage of funds.
They came out of the bank shouting slogans against the chief minister who was due to arrive there from Nagar.

Police, called in to disperse the protesters, opened fire when a man in the mob started throwing stones, injuring a police official.
Gilgit Deputy Commissioner Asad Zamin said one man had died and six others suffered injuries.

As news of the killing spread, people in Gilgit blocked a major highway, disrupting traffic for several hours.
It is learnt that the riots spread to Gulmit where a police station was torched. The protest forced suspension of boat service and closure of the Sost dry port.
