"General Abizaid reaffirmed to the prime minister the commitment of US President George W. Bush to the success of the political process in Iraq," the statement said.
The statement added that US forces were dedicated to continued co-operation with the Iraqi government to stand up their armed forces so that they can take responsibility for security in the country.
They also discussed the role of neighbouring countries in Iraq's security.
The meeting follows calls by senior Democrat lawmakers for a phased US withdrawal to begin within six months after the party's capture of both houses of Congress in mid-term elections last week.
