How a son arranged his mother’s marriage after 18 years of divorce in Lahore

Abdul Ahad appears on Aaj News morning show to share the story

Abdul Ahad, described as a “trailblazer” by many on social media, has said that arranging his mother’s marriage after 18 years of divorce in Lahore was ‘unexpected’.

“I came from the office, it was around 12am and she [my mother] came to my room and she told me that Tuba [my sister] is telling me a rishta. I had put AirPods and took it off to reply to her OK as my mother does not listen to such topics and we wind up these discussions,” he said while appearing on the Aaj Pakistan morning show.

Ahad’s videos of becoming a witness in his mother’s marriage went viral on social media. He was accompanied by his sister.

Several people praised the 18-year-old for being part of the big decisions in his mother’s life. In different interviews, he admitted that he was hesitant to upload videos on social media. Ahad acknowledged some news platforms’ approach for an interview, saying that they took it positively.

“Later, a day after tomorrow, my mother again came to my room and told me that there was a rishta. She said that Tuba gave me his number and I received his call,” Ahad told Sidra Iqbal, the morning show host.

After this, he said that he took some interest in the proposal. But Ahad said that he asked his mother about it, but she asked him to talk to the potential suitor. “Then I spoke to him and I was having a very normal conversation and got to know about him,” he said and got to know that the man was willing to accept the family.

“I had talked with the suitor; I really liked him, then I talked with my family, consulting with my grandparent, uncle, and elder persons in the family. The family met with him [potential suitor] to get him to know better,” he said.

Ahad expressed that there was a “sense of acceptance” from the potential suitor, who referred to him as ‘son’ during their conversation.

“When the conversation started, he referred to me as a son. I told one of my friends that after a long time, I had this feeling. I feel good. I don’t know what this is, but it is kind of overwhelming. I liked him.”

After an initial conversation, the mother expressed a willingness to explore the relationship, recognising a need for companionship.

He went on to add that till the first week of November the family had not thought about it, saying that his mother was worried about them.

“At the same time, when this was discussed, I realised that she was thinking it. Then I decided to totally support her.

When asked, Ahad said he wanted his future stepfather to “own his mother on everything and make her feel comfortable” as she was introverted.

He admitted that such a thing could only happen when his mother would allow it. “Out of nowhere, my sister switched her job where she made a friend and he [his stepfather] was her uncle. It was very unexpected. There was nothing before November.”

Ahad noted that the situation unfolded “unexpectedly,” with discussions beginning in the first week of November. Just days later, the potential suitor visited Pakistan, and they shared a lunch together, during which “everything progressed smoothly and naturally.”

In response to a question, he said that women don’t move on when their husbands die or divorced. He was of the view that they might also have family pressure to make such decisions.

“But even if someone does, they choose to hide it,” Ahad said and that he being an internet influencer was hesitant to share the video clips of social media.
