The Amerigo Vespucci, the oldest active military vessel in the Italian Navy, has arrived at Karachi port for a three-day goodwill visit.

Constructed in 1931, this tall ship is renowned globally as “the most beautiful ship in the world.” Its 24 canvas sails, covering a total area of 2,600 square meters, highlight its impressive design.

The engine room, brass deck instruments, and rosewood-crafted stairs showcase a perfect blend of traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance. The Amerigo Vespucci serves as both a training and diplomatic vessel, equipped with wind-powered sails and diesel engines.

Upon its arrival in Karachi, the ship, with its towering masts and intricate rigging, received a warm welcome.

Named after the famous Italian explorer, the vessel is currently on a goodwill tour that will take it to 28 countries from 2023 to 2025, with Pakistan being one of its stops.

During this visit, the ship’s officers and crew will engage with members of the Pakistan Navy.

The Amerigo Vespucci still boasts its original navigational instruments and compass, which are fully operational. Its polished brass features and rosewood stairs shine brightly, reflecting careful preservation. While it was initially fully sail-powered, the ship now includes four diesel engines, allowing it to reach speeds of 8 nautical miles per hour (16 km/h).
