Madhubala, the elephant from Karachi Zoo, has been successfully transferred to Safari Park, where she is expected to arrive shortly.

A team from Four Paws supervised the transfer process at the zoo, ensuring everything went smoothly.

On her last day at Karachi Zoo, where she had resided for 15 years, Madhubala was securely placed in a special crate for her journey. She will join fellow elephants Sonia and Malika at Safari Park, a move prompted by the passing of her long-time companion, Noor Jahan.

Dr. Amir Khalil, Director of Four Paws Pakistan, noted that Madhubala’s condition has significantly improved, and the transfer truck has arrived. Last year, Madhubala had been left alone after Noor Jahan’s death on April 22, which had a negative impact on her health, particularly after she fell into a pond.

Concerns about Madhubala’s well-being led experts to advocate for her immediate transfer to Safari Park, where she would have companionship with two other elephants. A team from Four Paws International came to Karachi to assist local authorities with the transfer.

Dr. Saif-ur-Rehman, Administrator of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, highlighted the challenges of moving Madhubala due to her size, weighing over 2,000 kilograms. The elephant will be transported in a specially designed container, measuring 5,880 millimeters wide and 3,150 millimeters long.

Both Madhubala and Noor Jahan were captured in Tanzania in 2010 at a young age, separated from their mothers, and brought to Karachi under a controversial agreement along with two other elephants.

Pakistan’s zoos have frequently faced criticism for inadequate animal welfare. In 2020, a court ordered the closure of Islamabad’s only zoo due to poor management and lack of proper care for the animals.
