A three-member Supreme Court issued on Tuesday a significant ruling regarding the inheritance rights of sisters, penned by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa.

The decision emphasises that women should be granted protection over their inherited properties, addressing a longstanding issue where women are often deprived of their rightful share in accordance with Sharia law.

The ruling highlights that unfortunately, many women are denied their legal inheritance rights, and some lawyers facilitate this injustice. To address frivolous litigation aimed at obstructing such rights, the apex court has imposed a fine of Rs300,000 on the petitioner who brought forward “baseless claims.”

Furthermore, the ruling stipulates that the fine collected should be distributed among the sisters who have been unjustly deprived of their inheritance.
