Chinese State-owned enterprise, China Green Development Group (CGDG), has activated the 3.5 gigawatt Midong solar project located in Urumqi, which is in Xinjiang, China.

The project cost CNY15.45 billion, which is equivalent to approximately $2.13 billion in investment.

A subsidiary of CGDG China Green Electricity Investment has brought online the 3.5 gigawatt Midong solar photovoltaic (PV) project located in Urumqi.

The Midong solar PV facility operated by CGDG is the world’s largest solar power plant, surpassing the previous record holder.

There was the introduction of a 2.2 gigawatt solar park operated by the Chinese state-owned utility Huanghe Hydropower Development was considered the world’s largest solar facility, having begun operations in October 2020 before the Midong solar PV facility.

The construction of the Midong solar project was carried out in stages by two Chinese companies including China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp and Power Construction Corporation of China (also known as PowerChina).

The total investment required for the installation was CNY15.45 billion.

The project utilizes over 5.26 million 650-watt monocrystalline bifacial double-glass solar PV panels supplied by an unnamed manufacturer.

The extensive supporting infrastructure for the Midong solar facility includes the installation of 1.23 million support piles, five 220-kilovolt booster stations, and over 208 kilometers of transmission lines connecting the solar array to the grid through a 750-kilovolt substation.

CGDG is a major energy investment entity established in December 2020 under the central Chinese government.
