Search under way for another suspect; police recover both mobile phones

Islamabad police have claimed to have arrested a suspect accused of looting two diplomats of Saudi Arabia in the federal capital, the interior ministry said on Monday.

In a social media post, the police claimed that they arrested the accused within 12 hours and recovered both mobile phones. They were worth over Rs300,000 each, according to the complaint.

The first information report stated that one of the suspects was carrying a dagger, while the other was armed. The suspects forcibly snatched two mobile phones from the victims and fled the scene. “They kept asking us the passwords,” it stated and added that the suspects ran away towards the Centarus Mall.

The complaint invoked Section 392 (punishment for robbery) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Further investigation and raids to arrest other accused were under way, the police said and added that the suspect was traced through mobile technology, cameras and human intelligence.

The Islamabad IG and DIG Ali Raza went to the Saudi embassy and handed over the recovered mobile phones to the authorities concerned.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised police efforts and announced his decision to award certificates of appreciation to the police team concerned.
