NA speaker summons Parliament’s joint session for presidential election

Newly-elected National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on Sunday summoned the joint session of the Parliament to elect the next president of Pakistan.

In a notification issued on Sunday, Speaker Sadiq summoned the session on March 9 at 10am.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari will be contesting for a second term in the President’s Office. He will be up against Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai who is backed by Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) lawmakers.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif was elected the prime minister of Pakistan as he secured 201 votes after the polling process ended in the newly-elected National Assembly.

This is Sharif’s second consecutive term in the Prime Minister’s Office. He was selected as the PM after former prime minister Imran Khan was ousted through a no-confidence vote in 2022. He managed a 13-party coalition during his 16 months in power.
