Peshawar High Court struck down an Election Commission of Pakistan decision to take away Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s electoral symbol, bat, on Wednesday.

The decision was reserved by a two-member bench of the PHC including Justice Arshad Ali and Justice Anijaz Anwar and was announced shortly afterwards on Wednesday.

The court put out three points in its order. IT said that the ECP decision was unconstitutional and that PTI’s election certificate should be released on the website. The court also ordered that PTI’s bat symbol should be immediately restored.

There were a total of 14 parties in the case, eight of which failed to show up in court in Wednesday’s hearing.

ECP had deprived the PTI of its electoral symbol after ruling that it had not held intra-party elections as per its constitution.

The decision had been taken after the party hurriedly organised the election after being given a 20-day ultimatum by the court.
