Applications that require English language test in UK
English language test is a prerequisite for entering the United Kingdom on a skilled worker or a student visa. But there is a list that shows which applications require such a test to enter the country.
“There are 2 types of test as different immigration routes require different levels of English language ability. The test you will need to take depends on what you are applying for,” according to the government.
Applicants’ language skills are judged on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level. They will have to see what specific guidance is required for their immigration route.
Applicants with the following routes will have to take a test that assesses reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities:
- Health and Care Worker
- High Potential Individual
- Innovator Founder
- Minister of Religion
- Scale-up Worker
- Skilled Worker
- Start-up
- Student
But there are routes where the applicant will need to take a test that assesses speaking and listening abilities:
- Citizenship
- International Sportsperson
- Parent
- Partner
- Representative of an Overseas Business
- Settlement (also known as indefinite leave to remain)
It merits here to mention that candidates outside the UK can take a secure English language test (SELT) from LanguageCert, Pearson, PSI Services (UK) Ltd – Skills for English (UKVI), and IELTS SELT Consortium.
