The Supreme Court on Saturday responded to a letter sent by former prime minister Imran Khan, saying that Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa was “fully cognisant of his constitutional duties”.

In a statement, Secretary to CJP Dr Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed called it surprising that the ‘sealed envelope’ couriered by advocate Intazar Hussian Panjutha had already been distributed to the media before it was received at the office of the CJP on December 1.

On November 30, the PTI founder in his letter to the CJP urged the release of female prisoners arrested during the May 9 riots.

He called for the establishment of a commission to investigate the disappearances of journalists and PTI political workers and requested to lift the media ban.

According to the statement, the SC received the 77-page ‘undated’ document which was couriered by advocate Intazar Hussian Panjutha.

“Misgivings also arise when the political party on whose behalf the document has ostensibly been sent is well represented by advocates. Only recently its advocates conducted two significant cases in the Supreme Court, on the military courts and the elections,” the statement said.

The top court assured CJP Isa was fully cognisant of his constitutional duties and will “neither be pressured nor favour anyone.”
