PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto has reiterated that every political party should have a level playing field, as the country heads towards general elections to have a new government.

“The political instability in the country can end with the announcement of the election date,” the scion of the Bhutto dynasty told a press conference after the central executive committee meeting of the party in Lahore on Friday.

The top body of PPP was in Lahore on Thursday to discuss political and economic matters of the country. They were due to hold a press conference on Friday to tell the media about the decision taken in the meeting.

The meeting was called at a time when the PPP and the PTI had expressed concerns over the management of the polls overseer body in the country. Over the past few days, Bilawal’s party has demanded that the Election Commission of Pakistan renew the development schemes that it banned in the province.

While the PTI has claimed that there were attempts to bar its party from contesting the elections—a concern that was also shared by the ECP. But caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi has dispelled the suggestion of bias.

He told Reuters on Thursday that his government would assist the commission in providing a level-playing field to all parties.

At the press conference, Bilawal said that there were attempts to resolve the matter of the election date politically after negotiation but some people of the PTI decided to attack state buildings on May 9.

“The PPP can talk to those who are not directly involved in the events of May 9,” stated Bilawal. Violent protests broke out after former prime minister Imran Khan was arrested on May 9 from the premises of Islamabad High Court in a graft case. Protesters had vandalised state buildings and military installations.

“That event crossed the line and that should be made an example of politically or administratively as you want. Rest, as far as dialogue is concerned, the doors of PTI are opened for non-militant parties,” said Bilawal.

The PPP chief went on to claim that his party was expelled from Punjab by former spymaster Lt-General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, former CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry, and a political party under a conspiracy. But he alleged that the purported conspirators bear the brunt of such efforts.

“The PPP should immediately announce the election date,” he said but stopped short of his demand to have elections within 90 days after the dissolution of the assembly.

He shared that the party would share its manifesto after the announcement of the election date. Moreover, he said the talk on political alliance would also be held after it.

“The PPP does not consider itself limited to a single province. The PPP is the voice of farmers and labourers,” Bilawal said and alleged that his party was kept out of Punjab under a conspiracy.

“Those who kept the PPP out of the politics in an undemocratic way were suffering today,” he said, “an ally begs when it is in difficulty, but chases after coming out of difficulty.”
