Crackdown finds 8 million units of electricity being stolen
A crackdown by the government on electricity theft is continuing across the country. Officials have found that eight million units of electricity being stolen.
A total of 4,054 complaints were filed in police stations across the country. Out of these 1,529 were registered as cases.
As a result of the cases, a total of 194 people were arrested including a Lahore Electric Supply Company official.
Overall, 4,702 cases of electricity ehft were confirmed across the country which amounted to 8 million units. Authorities have imposed fines of over 350 millions on the culprits.
The highest number of cases of theft were found in Multan (1,317) and Lahore (1,159). There were 627 cases in Hyderabad, 475 in Quetta, 344 in Sukkur, 296 in Peshawar, 201 in Faisalabad, 128 in Gujranwala and 95 in Islamabad.
The crackdown was launched on September 7 after the government faced protests over inflated electricity bills. The government is seeking to improve recoveries.
