Documents cannot be declassified on verbal orders: Fawad
Fawad Hassan Fawad, former principal secretary to Nawaz Sharif, has clarified that Imran Khan’s sentence in the Toshakhana case has only been suspended and not overturned.
Fawad made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Asma Shirazi in Faisla Aap Ka on Aaj News.
He said that the courts have been consistent in suspending improsionment sentences less than five years as it wanted to ensure that no innocents would be punished.
However, he added that there were also many bad precedents set by courts, many of which had been set in petitions filed by Imran Khan.
He also said that the sentence will remain suspended until Imran’s appeals in the cases are decided. He added that the political remarks that a montoring judge had been appointed to save a convicted person carried weight.
Regarding a statement submitted by Azam Khan, former principal secretary to Imran Khan, Fawad said that a PM and his secretary have an ‘exclusive’ relationship.
He said that while the statement was important, he had not seen anything that suggested that Azam Khan had turned approver against the former prime minister.
Fawad said that the cipher case was a serious matter as a secret document being released amounted to a violation of the oath of office. He added that even if the cipher was to declassifeid, there was a proper procedure to do it and verbal orders were not enough.
He said that Imran Khan could face problems as he had used the cipher for personal gains.
