A neighbourhood in Karachi’s Manghopir shines as an example of harmony being home to believers of three different religions who have been living together for years.

Azaan from the mosque, Aarti from the temple and hymns from the churches are within the earshot if you spend a day on this unique crossroad of religions.

“We [residents] celebrate Eid, Diwali and Christmas together. This mandir has been here for more than 150 years and we never had any issues,” said Lal Singh, caretaker of the Hindu temple which is built adjacent to the mosque.

“We lower our voice during arti [ritual] or stop the pooja when we hear the Muslim call of prayer to not disturb it,” he added.

The mandir is situated on the right side of the mosque while the church is to the left and the boundary walls of these three worship places are connected.

The father at the church said that the people live in harmony in the area and respect each other’s beliefs and religion. “I have been here and taking care of the church since 1984 and Muslims always participate in the Christian festivals.”
