ECP begins action on SC’s election orders

Decision made to contact authorities for funds and security

The Election Commission of Pakistan decided to begin implementing the Supreme Court verdict on organising elections to the Punjab Assembly on May 14.

Sources said that the ECP has expressed that it is ready to conduct elections and has recalled its March 22 order that postponed elections from April 30 to October 8.

The ECP has decided to contact the caretaker government in Punjab for a consultation regarding arrangements and provision of personnel. The commission will also contact the finance ministry once again for providing the required funds.

The SC had issued a judgement on Tuesday ordering the ECP to hold polls to the provincial assembly on May 14.

The court judgement had specified that the election schedule previously be issued be announced once again with delays added for the time lost after the commission announce postponement of polls.

The schedule issued by the commission says that candidates will be allowed to file appeals against any issues in their nomination papers by April 10 and a final list of candidates will be announced by April 18.

The SC verdict had also directed the government to provide all necessary support to the government including releasing funds by April 10.
