In addition to humans and material losses, the devastating floods have inflicted heavy losses to livestock in Sindh where 24 districts have been affected and floodwaters have inundated thousands of square feet.

Sindh Minister for Livestock Abdul Bari Pitafi said that 80,000 cattle have died during rain-triggered flash floods in the province, with losses estimated to be in excess of Rs27 billion.

“Due to the shortage of food, there are fears that more more animals will be affected,” the minister said during a press conference on Monday in Karachi. He added there was an acute shortage of medicines as well as veterinarians.

The rains and ensuing floods broke a three-decade record, devastating everything in its path. This included hundreds of thousands of cattle resulting in massive losses for farmers and livestock growers.

Since mid-June, Pakistan has been drenched by extreme monsoon rains that have led to flooding. According to National Disaster Management Authority, the floods have affected more than 33 million people.

Pitafi said that the livestock department could hardly approach 15 percent of those affected as the relief and rescue operations were still extremely hard to carry out.

Sindh government, meanwhile, said that there was not much to do for the people but to wait for the water level to go down and the allocation of additional resources.

Bari said that the floods have affected 60 per cent of Pakistan’s land mass, destroying poultry and livestock shelters and farms.
