Pakistan’s former ambassador to Italy Nadeem Riaz has been found guilty of harassing a Pakistani official at the Rome embassy.

Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment, Kashmala Tariq decided to dismiss the head of mission of the Pakistani embassy in Italy after allegations of harassment were proved.

Riaz was accused by Saira Ali, a Grade 20 officer in the Ministry of Commerce, of harassment at the workplace.

Federal Ombudsperson ordered the dismissal of Riyaz from the service and also imposed a 25,000 euros fine, which would be paid to the complainant.

Saira Ali worked as a Commercial Secretary at the Pakistan Embassy in Rome.

The expulsion from the service of the diplomat was of symbolic value, as Riaz is already retired.

Tariq instructed Foreign Office officials to implement the decision in letter and spirit within seven days and submit the report.

Meanwhile, Saira expressed her gratitude in a recent tweet.

"Won the sexual harassment case against Mr. Nadeem Riaz, Ex-Ambassador to Italy. It was a long fight for justice," Saira Ali tweeted.

She thanked Kashmala for hearing and deciding her case.

In late 2018, Saira alleged that Nadeem forced her to travel with him to places unrelated to her job. She claimed that the former envoy also pushed to arrange residence near his own.

According to the complaint, the ambassador "sexually harassed" the official and with the use of different tactics and different ways made the working environment hostile for her to the point that she was forced to leave Rome to return to Pakistan.
