Last day of NCOC's operation today, says Asad Umar

The federal minister says the Covid-19 monitoring body will cease its working due to 'all time low' virus indicators and 'high level of vaccination'

Today will be the last day of operation for the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), a body monitoring the Covid-19 situation, as the country shows "all-time low" virus indicators and a "high level of vaccination", said the body's chief and federal minister Asad Umar on Thursday.

Umar lauded his two-year association with the NCOC, saying chairing the body and working with the most dedicated team had been the "greatest privilege and honour of my life".

In his tweet, Umar mentioned that the responsibilities related to the monitoring of Covid-19 were being passed on to the health ministry.

In another tweet, the NCOC chief thanked Allah for his mercy and support to overcome the "unprecedented challenge" of Covid-19 and expressed immense pride as Pakistan also received "praise" for being "one of the most successful" countries in tackling the pandemic.

As the NCOC closes down, Prime Minister Imran Khan congratulated the NCOC team and its leadership for "professional, nationally-coordinated response to the pandemic", saying international agencies and people in the field recognised Pakistan globally as one of the most successful countries due to its Covid-19 response.

The NCOC not only monitored and offered daily updates on the Covid situation it was also responsible for issuing standard operating procedures for the country, while also imposing restrictions when positivity rates went up.

On the last day of the NCOC operations, Pakistan recorded 244 new virus cases during the last 24 hours, according to the body's data published on Thursday.

The Covid-19 positivity rate was 0.82 per cent across the country, with six deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Currently, 439 people infected with Covid-19 are in critical care.

At least 1.5 million people tested positive for the coronavirus since it emerged in 2020, with more than 1.4 million people recovering from Covid-19. The country has witnessed 30,355 deaths because of the virus during this time period.

While more than 101 million people have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
