Social media users paid tribute to the Baloch activist Karima Baloch, whose body was found floating in Toronto’s Lake Ontario last year on December 22.

“True daughter of Balochistan soil,” wrote Twitter user Nadeem Askar.

One person called her a “beacon of light for the upcoming generation,”

Baloch was one of the most famous human rights activist from Balochistan. She fought for the thousands of people who were kidnapped and “disappeared” by security forces in Pakistan.

She was involved in nationalist politics and defied conservative norms to the point that her activism cost her the freedom to live safely in her own country. In 2015, Baloch fled to Canada where she was later granted political asylum. Even in exile, she didn’t stop fighting for her cause. In 2016, Baloch made it to the 100 most inspirational and influential women list by the BBC.

Toronto police declared the activist’s death as not suspicious, however, her family and others from Balochistan believe that something doesn’t add up. They have called on the police to investigate her death in depth.
