Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah has said that parliamentary tenure should be reduced to four years as democracy has not worked properly due to a fairly long tenure of the assembly.

While speaking to media on Saturday, the Opposition Leader said that the PPP had also floated the proposal in 2014 but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government had not considered it.

However, he said that Nawaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar had earlier agreed that the proposal on a four-year-long tenure should come into force from the next term. He said there is a lack of tolerance in society due to which many times dictators interfered in democratic dispensation.

People could not bear government for a longer period. He said that a legislation should be introduced to reduce the tenure of Parliament from five to four years. "This step will be better for the country and its institutions," he said.

"I am giving this proposal by keeping in mind the past experiences and tenures of different governments. Now it is time the PML-N government should consider it and make a legislation," he said. He said this step would be in the interest of the government and institutions. He said the main reason behind this suggestion is to let democracy flourish in the country.

The opposition leader expressed reservations over the provisional report of the population census and said the records of the Statistics Division and the Pakistan Army should be compared. He added that the facts would come to the forefront once the two census records are compared.

According to the provisional summary results of the sixth population and housing census, Pakistan's total population has been recorded at 207.774 millions. The sixth Housing and Population Census began after a period of 19 years on March 15 last.
