Sentences by military courts: SC to take up 17 petitions next week

A larger bench of Supreme Court's will take up next week 17 appeals against death sentences awarded by the military courts.

A 5-member larger bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali will take up 17 appeals filed against various alleged terrorists, mostly those belonging to tribal areas.

Earlier, after hearing Asma Jahangir's arguments in the matter, a three-member judge bench of Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali had issued ordered the formation of a larger bench. The bench also decided to club all the 17 appeals for adjudication.

It may be recalled that while extending stay orders for death row prisoners, the bench asked Deputy Attorney General for Pakistan to submit a complete record of proceedings of trial court before the apex court during the next hearing of case.

According to the cause list, as many as 17 petitioners - Bacha Laiqa, Anwar Bibi, Aliur Rehman, Nek Maro, Alaf Khan, Sakhi Muhammad, Sher Alam, Mashooqa Bibi, Javed Iqbal, Mohibullah, Fazal Ghaffar, Zarba Khela, Ajab Gul, Aqsan Mehboob, Khan Afsar Khan, Hafiz Muhammad Sadiq and Malik Muhammad Akram - have challenged the convictions and military trials against their relatives.

Besides, the larger bench will also resume on June 15 the hearing of 97 pleas, seeking enforcement of Human Rights as fundamental rights in the matters including missing persons, discovery of mass graves in Khuzdar and alleged involvement of Agencies in disappearances of citizen of Pakistan.

The Chief Justice will head the bench whereas other members of the bench are Justice Amir Hani Muslim, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh, Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik and Justice Faisal Arab.
