Gilani.. The first ever PM punished for contempt

After been disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani marked a history, as he is the first head of government around the world ever to be formally punished for insulting the Supreme court in any state.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani stood disqualified since his conviction for contempt and asked President Asif Ali Zardari to appoint a new premier.

The whole of cabinet of Prime Minister has also been disqualified. The conviction leads to Gilani’s disqualification as member of the National Assembly for at least five years.

On April 26th SC found Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani guilty of contempt of court for refusing to reopen corruption cases against the president, but gave him only a symbolic sentence of 30 seconds after that the case was referred to the Speaker National Assembly.

Gilani refused to resign even though the apex court had said at the time that his conviction could lead to his disqualification.

The Speaker in May ruled out the disqualification of Gilani following his conviction, saying he had not been charged with acting in a manner prejudicial to the integrity or independence of the judiciary.

Gilani's Pakistan Peoples Party won a considerable victory in the 2008 parliamentary elections, and with the consent of coalition government, Gillani was nominated for the office of Prime minister, taking the oath from President Pervez Musharraf on 25 March 2008.

According to a report in Washington post, at least 22 prime ministers all over the world have been found guilty of committing various crimes, leading to their conviction by courts during the last nine decades or so.

The list of 22 convicted prime ministers also includes three Pakistani heads of the government.

The research report also said that, nine of these 22 convicted prime ministers (including Pakistan’s Zulfikar Ali Bhutto) were awarded capital punishment. Of these nine executed prime ministers, four had hailed from Hungary alone.

Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was convicted in 1999 for not appearing in court, though the Supreme Court later overturned that judgment.

In July 2002, Benazir was also convicted by Accountability Court in Rawalpindi. She was sentenced to three years in prison.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for corruption in July 2000. He had also been fined 20 million rupees and barred from holding public office for 21 years.
