SC orders strict execution of rules in elections

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Friday announced the verdict in Electoral expenditure case and ordered for strict implementation of laws during elections.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the Workers Party’s constitutional petition, seeking limited expenditures by the political parties during the elections. Other members of the bench comprised Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez.

Announcing the verdict, CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry said that, In past, the responsibility in conducting fair and free elections was never fulfilled.

The election commission is responsible of to make sure that the parties strictly follow the election rules.

The court, in its order, stated that every political party has the right to take part in elections and to try to become a part of government under Article 17.

Furthermore, No party would be allowed to transport people in their cars to the balloting stations. The court also said that polling stations would not be 2 kilometer far from the residential areas so the people will not find any difficulty in reaching the stations.

The court ruled that only one bank account number should be taken from the candidates in their details.

The court moreover directed that legislation should be introduced to make it mandatory for all those eligible to cast their votes.
