Strike observed in old city area and Parts of Sindh

KARACHI: After an unleashing violence and killings of a dozen of people in Karachi the previous day, the old parts of city observe a complete shutter down strike on the call of Awami Tehreek (AT), Aaj news reported.

Tension has gripped several other areas including Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Sachchal Goth, Safora Goth and Malir while normal activities have resumed in other parts of the city.

According to our correspondent, An unidentified man was gunned down and a bus was set on fire in the Lee market area of Karachi earlier today.

Other incidents of Ariel firing within the Bolton market and Denso Hall area led shop-keepers to close their businesses.

The AT has called for a province-wide shutter-down strike against the indiscriminate firing and killings of the pro-Sindh (Mohabbat-e-Sindh) rally which was directed towards Karachi Press Club.

Various cities including Larkana, Sukkur, Mirpur khas, Hyderabad etc observed a wheel jam strike on the call of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Awami Tehreek (AT) and other nationalist parties of Sindh.

At least 11 persons have been killed and 30 injured as a result of exchange of fire between two sides following a firing on the rally of Awami Tehreek near Napier Road.

Trouble-makers have put almost 10 cars and at least 20 motorcycles on fire.

Inspector General Police Mushtaq Shah said that a reporter, camera person of a private television channel and three police persons including Station House Officer (SHO) also sustained bullet injuries.

CM Sindh Qaim Ali Shah ordered a judicial inquiry into the violence while a joint meeting is also expected to attend by Interior Minister Rehman Malik in the Chief minister house today.

President Asif Ali Zardari vehemently condemned the killing of innocent people in Karachi.

The President directed that strict measures should be taken to maintain peace in the city. He said peace in Karachi was collective responsibility of all the political forces.
