Asghar Khan case: Hearing adjourned till June 4

ISLAMABAD: The hearing of Asghar Khan case was underway at the Supreme Court, today. Aaj News reported.  The petition of this case was filed by (retd) Air Marshal Ashgar Khan, claiming that heavy amounts were distributed among politicians.

The Habib Bank inquiry report was submitted to the SC today, after which Cheif Justice Ifitkhar Chaudry remarked that the evidence provided by (retd) Lt. Gen. Durrani is sufficient.

The three member bench was headed by CJ Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

The petition for this case was filed a good 16 years ago, when (retd) Air  Marshal Asghar Khan tried to take action against the distribution of millions of rupees to anti-PPP politicians by the ISI, to manipulate the upcoming elections in 1990.

The ISI's director general in 1990, (retd) Lt. Gen. Asad Durrani was accused of distributing money along with then army chief, (retd) Mirza Aslam Baig and the dysfunctional, Mehran Bank's CEO Younis Habib.

On 9 May, former Army chief,  Mirza Aslam Baig had submitted his statement in the court, denying any involvement in the disbursements of the money among politicians.

Today, Asad Durrani repelled Baig's statement in a counter-statement, claiming that Mirza Baig was on board the whole operation right from the start.

According to his statement, Mirza Baig was involved in giving careful instructions and oversaw the distribution of money to politicians.

The hearing was later adjourned till June 4.
