Google & LUMS join hands for new TPI program
LAHORE: Lahore University of Management Sciences is preparing to launch a new Technology for the People Initiative (TPI) at LUMS, with financial coordination to be received by Google Inc. The idea of the TPI is to nurture technology solutions that are deemed necessary to the socio-economic context of Pakistan hugely affecting areas of public policy, governance, citizen services and improvement in quality of life.
“We’re pleased to be supporting this new initiative focused on technological solutions to social issues in Pakistanâ€, stated William Fitzgerald, member of the Public Policy and Government Affairs team at Google.
Technology related Research and Development programs are already a part of LUMS portfolio, the aim of the TPI is to gather all these activities on to a single stage,  force their synergies for multiplier effect and to instigate new schemes within these areas.
TPI will also be incorporated within LUMS initiative on Internet and the Society in order to boost activities and research within the entire university for better utilization of cyberspace and the country’s development.
Sohaib Khan, Chairman of the Computer Science Department at LUMS pointed out towards successful completion of prior projects by the TPI team. These projects included mapping of socio-economic indicators, judicial record maintenance within lower courts, disaster and water management in canals. “We are excited to be launching this new initiative, where we can leverage technology to create real value for the citizensâ€, he stated.
