Wigan Athletic pulls of a shocker against Arsenal
LONDON:Â In an attempt to relieve pressure and avoiding the relegation zone, Wigan shockingly defeated Arsenal 2-1 on Tuesday. The victory saw Wigan five points clear of the relegation zone whilst Arsenal stayed third, five points ahead of fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Wigan side score two goals in early succession and kept their nerves till the end to secure a much needed win. The first two goals came in the first eight minutes with Franco di Santo scoring the first one and Jordi Gomez scoring the second. Arsenal took quick action to the goals and Thomas Vermaelen was quick enough to pull one back for the Londoners 21 minutes later.
Wigan Manager Roberto Martinez was full of praise for his team. “I am so so satisfied because this wasn't an accident, the manner in which we coped physically and tactically makes me very very proudâ€, Martinez stated.
Arsenal being held off at the number three position has opened up the fight for the Champions League spot with strong contenders being Chelsea and New Castle United.
