US welcomes Myanmar vote, urges more reform
The White House on Monday congratulated the people of Myanmar and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the weekend elections, and voiced hope it would lead to more reform.
"This election is an important step in Burma's democratic transformation, and we hope it is an indication that the government of Burma intends to continue along the path of greater openness, transparency, and reform," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement, using the Southeast Asian's former name.
