More than 6 people including vice president PPP Lyari Hassan Soomro were killed in recent clashes as violence continues in the Lyari area, the media said on Monday.

Fifteen people including two police officers have also been injured in the clashes.

The situation escalated after the killing of a gangster in the area. Angry residents clashed with police as renewed violence continued through till Monday.

Police shelled the crowd with tear gas. Businesses, shops and markets remained closed in the area for fear of the situation. On Sunday, police raided the Chakiwara area of Lyari during which they claim to have killed the gangster in an encounter.

SSP CID Sindh Muhammad Aslam said that the police raided Chakiwara No.II on a tip-off and killed the gangster. An encounter ensued between the gangsters and police in which the gangster was claimed to have been killed.

However, details suggest that the gangster’s accomplices escaped.
