Bill passed: Senate reaches accord on 20th amendment

Already passed by the National Assembly recently, the 20th amendment bill was finally approved by the Senate during its session today in Islamabad.

The bill was passed near unanimous with 74 votes in favor and two against it.

Some 28 parliamentarians who were suspended by the Supreme Court will now be have a constitutional right to their seats after President Zardari signs the 20th amendment of the constitution bill.

The 20th amendment will allow an temporary system to be constituted to oversee the upcoming general elections, already approved by the National Assembly, it only awaits the president's signature to become a part of the constitution.

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani addressed his colleagues after the session was over. “There is no looking back now as far as democracy is concerned and I want to say that gone are the days when a dictator would appear on national television and announce the toppling of an elected government,” he stated full of optimism.

The session ended on a congratulatory note.
