Babar Awan contempt case adjourned till 1st March

The contempt case against law minister Babar Awan resumed today, under the two-member apex bench in the Supreme Court.

Justice Athar Saeed Sheikh and Justice Aijaz Afzal were hearing the case.

Babar Awan’s advocate Ali Zafar argued with the court that his client be given the benefit of the doubt, but who ever ridiculed the court should be punished. He argued that his client had eminent respect for the court which is the reason for his presence.

As the hearing progressed, Justice Aijaz said that compromise on courts respect is out of the question.

“Should we tolerate this disrespect of the court?” he questioned the defense. “The defendant suspected of the court’s contempt is not a common man, but a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court,” he added.

The hearing was then adjourned till March 1.

A video of Awan’s press conference is to be scrutinized in the next hearing by the bench.
