Recently renowned German politician Angela Merkel’s political stronghold has suffered a great blow when Germany’s President Christian Wulff resigned. The announcement came after the prosecutors asked for his exemption from being prosecuted be revoked as part of a corruption investigation.

"I am ... today stepping down from the office of federal president to free up the way quickly for a successor," he said in a televised statement from his Bellevue palace.

Christian Wulff's resignation came through a TV address from the grandeur of the presidential Bellevue Palace in Berlin.

Following this resignation is a string of scandals which now threaten the German Chancellor at a time when the country is tangled in the eurozone debt crisis.
