Pakistan frees 14 Indian fishermen

Pakistani government released Fourteen Indian fishermen from district jail in Malir, here on Thursday.

The Indian fishermen had been arrested 15 months back for illegally entering Pakistani waters. They were among 274 fishermen who are detained in Pakistani jails.

The released men will now travel to Lahore via bus and will be handed over to the Indian authorities at Wagah Border.

Speaking outside Malir Jail, Chairperson of the Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners Nasir Aslam Zahid said the issue of fishermen’s release should be on the agenda of Indo-Pak talks.

Fishermen from India and Pakistan often end up in prisons across the border when they cross international maritime boundaries.

Indian authorities had earlier released 87 Pakistani fishermen.

The fishermen were captured between November 2010 and January 2011 for illegally entering Indian waters in the Arabian Sea.
