Singapore welcomes UN sanctions against North Korea

Singapore welcomes UN sanctions against North KoreaSingapore on Sunday welcomed UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea for its atomic test and urged the Stalinist state to abandon its nuclear weapons programme.
The Singapore government also urged North Korea to return to the six-party talks without any pre-conditions.
"It was important that the UN show its disapproval of the DPRK's (North Korea) defiance of the will of the international community in a concrete way," a foreign ministry spokesman said in statement.
"We hope that the DPRK will pay heed, abandon its nuclear weapons programme and return to the six-party talks without preconditions. This would be in the DPRK's own best interests."
The 15-member UN Security Council on Saturday unanimously agreed on a resolution calling for wide-ranging sanctions against North Korea over its declared nuclear test.
The UN resolution also demands the elimination of all North Korean nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, and provides for a travel ban on officials working on such weapons programs.
