The Sindh High Court suspended on Wednesday a judicial magistrate’s order to exhume the body of TV host and politician Aamir Liaquat Hussain for a postmortem.

The order came after Hussain’s family filed a counter-petition against the judicial magistrate order. The petition stated that the family did not want the grave to be desecrated, especially since foul play was ruled out and there were no marks on the body to indicate otherwise.

The family also said that they did not have any suspects in mind, nor did they have doubts about the circumstances surrounding Hussain’s death.

After the hearing, Advocate Zia Awan, the petitioner’s lawyer, said an unknown person filed the plea for postmortem of Hussain following the refusal of his family to conduct it. “This will be equivalent to opening a floodgate for anyone to file a petition for exhumation.”

Hussain died at the age of 50 on June 9 and was buried in the compound of the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine on June 10 after a standoff between the family and the police over the postmortem.

It was announced on June 21 that the Liaquat’s body would be exhumed on June 23 at 9:30am for a postmortem. A six-member medical board had also been formed in this regard.
