VIENNA : Austria's record-breaking ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer will miss the start of the World Cup season next month after a fresh knee injury during a training session, the national skiing federation said Tuesday.

Schlierenzauer, one of the sport's most successful athletes with 53 World Cup victories and a four-time Olympic medallist, toppled over as he tried to brake on a training slope in Ramsau am Dachstein on Monday.

Hospital checks revealed a tear on the inside of the right knee and bleeding in his thigh, the federation's doctor Wulf Gloetzer said.

"The positive news is that the cruciate ligament was not damaged and the knee remained very stable," Gloetzer said in a statement.

Schlierenzauer, 27, will have to wear a leg brace for several weeks and not be able to join the launch of the World Cup in Poland on November 17.

"Of course it's a shame that this had to happen at the start of the season but I will get through this and continue my journey," said the Tyrolean Olympian medallist and holder of a record 53 World Cup titles.

It is Schlierenzauer's third injury since 2016.

In February, he hurt the same knee in a ski flying crash in Germany in February, one month after he had returned from a year-long competition break.-AFP
