Approval of 20th amendment: Cabinet meeting begins
The federal cabinet meeting underway to pass the 20th amendment today in order to give legal cover to 28 by-elections and set down the formula appoint the caretaker prime minister to oversee the upcoming general elections.
Under the head of prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani the cabinet will approve the 20Â amendment which was agreed between the government and the opposition.
Sources said once the cabinet gave approval to the amended draft of the 20th amendment, it would be presented in the National Assembly at the Tuesday evening session.
The opposition and the government have already agreed upon the constitution of an independent Election Commission and the demand of the opposition to fix the tenure of five years instead of two for members of the election commission.
Prime Minister will also inform the Cabinet about the ongoing consultation process and coordination with the political parties sitting in the Parliament in this regard.
