• Defence Day was celebrated with zeal on Tuesday in the country to pay tribute to the martyrs of the armed forces and others, who sacrificed their lives in the war with India on Sept 6, 1965.

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a statement said the best tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs was to rebuild Pakistan in line with the vision of the founding fathers. He commended the role of the security forces in saving the lives of thousands of people during recent floods in Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab.

• Security forces killed terrorist commander Tufail during intelligence based operation in the general area of Mir Ali of the North Waziristan district, the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement. They recovered weapons and ammunition from the site.

• The Pakistan Army has said that it was “aghast at the defamatory and uncalled for the statement” about its senior leadership by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan at a political rally in Faisalabad on Sunday.

• President Arif Alvi has asked his party chief Imran Khan to explain the statement pertaining to the military, saying that the “whole army was patriotic”. Alvi told journalists in Peshawar that his job was to clear misunderstandings among stakeholders and bring them closer. The accused was also with cops. He claimed that the gun belonged to his two gunmen, who resided at the house. Gill said that perhaps someone would have entered the room before them.

• A larger bench of the Islamabad High Court would conduct contempt of court proceedings today (Tuesday) against PTI chief Imran Khan for threatening Islamabad police officers and a female magistrate during a rally on Saturday.

• The district and sessions court in Islamabad again granted police two-day physical remand of police Shehbaz Gill, chief of staff of former PM Imran Khan, on Monday. It asked the police to produce Gill before the court n August 24. The accused complained to the duty judge that he was not allowed to meet anyone.

• The Islamabad High Court has ordered that an SSP rank officer would oversee the investigation while hearing a case pertaining to the apparent torture of Gill during remand. It directed the government to appoint a retired judge as an inquiry officer to investigate the purported torture.

  • Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday had a one-on-one meeting with US Central Command (Centcom) Commander General Michael E Kurilla at the GHQ and discussed matters of mutual interest, the armed forces media wing said.

  • “Matters of mutual interest, regional security situation, and stability, defence and security cooperation particularly military to military ties were discussed during the meeting,” the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

  • The Senate session would begin at 10:30 today (Friday). The upper house of Parliament issued 11-point agenda for the session.

  • Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said told Senate on Thursday that Gill could not escape from an investigation by crying foul over apparent torture. PPP’s Sherry Rehman demanded of the PTI to apologise to the nation for purportedly telling lies.

  • PTI leaders in Senate said the investigation should be conducted on “saying wrong things” and distanced from Gill’s statements. But they also criticised Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah’s apparent actions. Fawad Chaudhry claimed that whatever Gill said had also been said by people in the past.

• PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was arrested by the Islamabad police “in accordance with the law” on charges of sedition and inciting the public against the state institutions, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Tuesday. The PTI described the incident as an “abduction”, not an “arrest”.

• Former information minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted that Gill was “abducted from the Banigala Chowk (roundabout) by men travelling in vehicles without number plates”. The party has decided to file a case against the development.

• The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority has warned all the satellite TV channels, specifically news and current affairs of legal action for either running a “propaganda” campaign or spreading “misinformation and disinformation” against the state institutions.

• Pakistani Consul General in Spain Salman Mirza has been sacked from his service after being proven guilty of harassing a woman in the consular office. The survivor had sent an application to Ambassador Shujaat Rathore, who after completing the inquiry had sent a report to Pakistan.

• Former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser has decided to move the Peshawar High Court against the Federal Investigation Agency’s notice. The agency summoned the former NA speaker on August 11 (tomorrow).

• Muharram 10 processions were taken out across the country. Around 7,000 processions and over 50,000 ‘majaalis’ took place across Pakistan, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said in a press conference. Over 16,000 rangers performed their duties during Muharram across the country.

• US President Joe Biden has signed a landmark bill to provide $52.7 billion in subsidies for US semiconductor production and research and to boost efforts to make the United States more competitive with China’s science and technology efforts.

• A new rain system will enter Karachi from tomorrow, the Meteorological Department has warned. There will be heavy rains till July 18.
• Police have raided a PTI candidate’s office in Lahore and arrested a man for resisting. According to police, Malik Nawaz Awan was accompanied by armed guards and Section 144 is enforced in the city so display of weapons is prohibited.
• Maryam Nawaz announced at her jalsa on Tuesday that as promised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to reduce the prices of petroleum products. He has directed the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Petroleum to take action.

More than Rs5.1 trillion worth of deficit federal budget was presented by Finance Minister Miftah Ismail on Friday in the National Assembly. The government employees get a 15 per cent increase in their salaries and an Rs2,000 monthly stipend announced for families having a household income of below Rs40,000. The Benazir Income Support Programme budget increased from Rs250 billion to Rs364 billion.
