Defence Day was celebrated with zeal on Tuesday in the country to pay tribute to the martyrs of the armed forces and others, who sacrificed their lives in the war with India on Sept 6, 1965.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a statement said the best tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs was to rebuild Pakistan in line with the vision of the founding fathers. He commended the role of the security forces in saving the lives of thousands of people during recent floods in Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab.

Security forces killed terrorist commander Tufail during intelligence based operation in the general area of Mir Ali of the North Waziristan district, the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement. They recovered weapons and ammunition from the site.

The Pakistan Army has said that it was “aghast at the defamatory and uncalled for the statement” about its senior leadership by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan at a political rally in Faisalabad on Sunday.

President Arif Alvi has asked his party chief Imran Khan to explain the statement pertaining to the military, saying that the “whole army was patriotic”. Alvi told journalists in Peshawar that his job was to clear misunderstandings among stakeholders and bring them closer. He maintained that they give advice to Imran but it’s the latter’s choice to accept it or not.

The coalition government has strongly condemned “statements against the Pakistan Army”. In a statement, it stressed that they would not allow the “constitutional respect” of national institutions affected at all.

PTI’s Fawad Chaudhry has alleged that the government has no moral and political status. He claimed that the people hate the government.

PM Shehbaz Sharif has directed the authorities concerned to prepare a robust National Flood Control Plan after due diligence and consulting with international experts in the field.

Water level aggravates in Pakistan’s biggest lake, Manchar, despite a relief cut made by the Sindh government to divert the water’s course to save the maximum population. Authorities made another cut to the RD-52 in Sehwan.

At least 570 people have been killed since mid-June in Sindh due to floods, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon said. He told reporters that more than 600,000 flood-hit people were living in relief camps.

Sindh Minister for Livestock Abdul Bari Pitafi said that 80,000 cattle have died during rain-triggered flash floods in the province, with losses estimated to be in excess of Rs27 billion.

President Arif Alvi has conferred the civil award of Hilal-e-Pakistan upon Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, in recognition of her outstanding services to Pakistan. The US has committed $30 million for urgently needed humanitarian assistance, she said.

The foreign affairs ministry has summoned the Indian charge d’affaires in Islamabad and registered a protest over the “extrajudicial killing” of a “mentally challenged” Pakistani national in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu Kashmir.

Headlines at 8am: Monsoon, rain damages, fixed tax, Asia Cup

Intermittent moderate to heavy rain started in parts of Karachi, as the fresh monsoon spell kicked in. The provincial education department has shut down the government and private schools on Wednesday (today) and Thursday (tomorrow) in view of weather forecasts. The Karachi university and intermediate board postponed exams.

Rainfall was also reported in twin cities, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Heavy rain continues to pummel Sindh and Balochistan. The death toll in both provinces has reached 460. Sanghar, Golarachi, Badin and low-lying areas on the coastal strip have been inundated amid more rain forecasts. The rail service from Quetta to intercity was still closed.

The change of weather has postponed the second stage of local government elections in Sindh. The Election Commission of Pakistan has postponed polls in Hyderabad, Matiari district, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, Dadu, Badin, Sajawal and Thatta. The commission in its meeting today (Wednesday) would review organising LB elections only in Karachi.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who cancelled his foreign trip because of heavy rains, has urged the people to help the flood affected people during his visit to flood-hit areas of Sindh. He advised the media to focus on the prevailing weather situation as the “political drama” would continue.

At least two people died due to the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Health said. The Covid positivity ratio stood at 1.76%.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that the government has ended the fixed tax system for traders, around 1.71 million consumers would not have to pay additional fuel adjustment charges. He reiterated that Pakistan was not going to default, adding that the government would soon control inflation.

PM Shehbaz pitched Pakistan to investors during a visit to Qatar on Tuesday. He added that investment opportunities were available in various sectors, including tourism, IT, food protection and energy.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that former prime minister Imran Khan would be arrested. He added that accused PTI leader Shahbaz Gill had admitted to giving a statement (on ARY News) by reading the script. Sanaullah alleged that perhaps Gill would have made contacts in India through the “recovered” satellite phone six months ago.

PTI chief Imran Khan has said he would not bow to the pressure, reiterating his demand for early elections while presiding over the party’s consultative meeting.

At least 18 social media accounts from “India” were involved in propaganda and hate speech against the army in the wake of the Lasbela helicopter crash, revealed a report presented to the interior ministry. The six-member inquiry committee gave a clean chit to political parties.

The Islamabad High Court has issued a show cause notice to PTI chief Imran Khan and summoned him in his personal capacity on August 31 in a case pertaining to the “contempt” of court following Saturday rally speech. PTI chief is accused of giving threats to Islamabad police heads and a female magistrate.

Another case was registered against Imran and many leaders of his party for allegedly violating Section 144 (which prohibits public gatherings of five or more people, processions, rallies in any public place within the limits of the area where the law has been imposed) during Saturday rally.

The Indian Air Force said on Tuesday the government had sacked three officers for accidentally firing a missile into Pakistan in March, an incident that the two nuclear-armed rivals handled calmly as there were no casualties.

Malaysia’s top court ordered former prime minister Najib Razak to begin a 12-year prison sentence on Tuesday after upholding a guilty conviction on charges related to a multi-billion dollar graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

With Ukraine set to mark its independence from Soviet rule in 1991 and six months since Russian forces invaded, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy warned of the risk of “brutal strikes” by Russia and said any attack would provoke a powerful response.

PTI leader Shahbaz Gill, who has been arrested by the Islamabad police on charges of sedition, has been declared “fit” as the medical board sought the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), Islamabad to discharge the accused from the infirmary.

At least four people died because of the coronavirus over the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Health reported. Around 510 virus cases were reported as the government urged people to get vaccines.

Former prime minister Imran Khan has advised the establishment to review its policies while addressing a seminar of journalists. “With power come responsibility,” he said and alleged that efforts were made to break his party and bring back ousted PM Nawaz Sharif. “Shahbaz Gill should not have made such comments. Gill is being asked about my meal,” PTI chief Imran said.

PM Shehbaz Sharif slammed his predecessor and claimed that Imran confused people by distorting facts. “This is what self-righteousness does to you: you consider yourself holy & above reproach despite flawed conduct in office. You play mind games & insult their intelligence through deceitful ways. Niazi's speech today was nothing but this,” he said in a tweet.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Thursday had a one-on-one meeting with US Central Command (Centcom) Commander General Michael E Kurilla at the GHQ and discussed matters of mutual interest, the armed forces media wing said.

“Matters of mutual interest, regional security situation, and stability, defence and security cooperation particularly military to military ties were discussed during the meeting,” the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

The Senate session would begin at 10:30 today (Friday). The upper house of Parliament issued 11-point agenda for the session.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said told Senate on Thursday that Gill could not escape from an investigation by crying foul over apparent torture. PPP’s Sherry Rehman demanded of the PTI to apologise to the nation for purportedly telling lies.

PTI leaders in Senate said the investigation should be conducted on “saying wrong things” and distanced from Gill’s statements.
The Quetta-Karachi road was once again temporarily closed for traffic after one of the sections was damaged in heavy rains. At least eight people were killed in different incidents, bringing the total rain death toll to 182 in Balochistan.

The Punjab Police raided PM’s aide Attaullah Tarar’s house on Friday night in an investigation pertaining to the May 25 incident when the then provincial government apparently blocked the PTI workers from participating in the protest. The incident took a different turn when Punjab Home Minister Hashim Dogar offered to serve coffee to Tarar when he appears before police.

While Tarar has described Dogar as a “frivolous character” and advised him to work “for the ministry”.

People are gearing up for the diamond jubilee celebrations in Pakistan. Girls from Lyari, an area in Karachi, have vowed to earn a big name for the country by participating in different sports and fields.

Headlines at 8am: PTI MNAs resignation, PDM, Balochistan floods

National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has accepted the resignations of 11 – out of a total of 135 – PTI members of the lower house of Parliament after consultations with the ruling coalition government. The former ruling party MNAs had resigned from the NA after the success of the vote of no-confidence against ex-PM Imran Khan.

The resolution for a vote of no-confidence has been accepted against Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari. The august House would vote today (Friday) for the speaker election, as PTI’s Sibtain Khan and Opposition’s Saiful Mulook Khokhar lock horns for the coveted slot.

The PML-Q has decided to remove Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, whose letter in the Punjab CM election had led to a tailspin in the political atmosphere, from the post of party president because of ill health. The party has also decided to remove Tariq Bashir Cheema from the post of general secretary as he was “hatching a conspiracy” against the party.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif has blasted the ruling coalition government in the wake of recent political developments. “Right from the first day, I was saying do not take this government,” he said during an online PDM meeting. The PDM has decided to send a presidential reference for the interpretation of Article 63A (disqualification on grounds of defection, etc) of the Constitution.

The Judicial Commission, the constitutional body responsible for appointing judges to superior courts, has rejected the appointment of judges to five vacant positions in the Supreme Court.

Heavy rains wreak havoc in Pakistan, with Balochistan being the most affected province in the country. The government has announced its decision to provide financial assistance to the flood affected people in the province. Relatives of the deceased would be given Rs1 million, Chief Secretary Abdul Aziz Aqeeli said on Thursday. At least 10,000 houses were destroyed in floods.

The price of electricity for K-Electric consumers has increased by Rs11.37 per unit. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority said the amount was increased under monthly fuel adjustment for June.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 246 runs in the second Test to end the series 1-1 on Thursday, with star performances from spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis. The bowling duo shared nine wickets between them.

Get tested if symptoms show as Covid returns in Pakistan: expert

KARACHI: The coronavirus tests, including polymerase chain reaction and rapid antigen, are a must to ascertain whether a person is suffering from a common cold or the contagion, said Dr Sadia Khalid, the consulting physician.

“Even if you are having fever or minor flu-like symptoms, we ask people to isolate themselves,” she said at the Aaj News morning show on Friday.

Dr Sadia, who completed her MBBS from the Rawalpindi Medical College, joined the show to share her expertise on the prevailing Covid-19 situation. She also spoke about the Covid protocol suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation. But, she added that it changed with the emergence of variants as the virus mutates.

Recommendations

Five days of isolation for a person infected with the Omicron variant of virus, as per WHO

Do a rapid antigen test after five days, if it is negative then isolation can be ended

In case of having symptoms and the test is negative then isolation is necessary

The expert supported the viewpoint that apparently the virus might have slipped down the order in people’s priority list with the change in weather and power crisis.

At least 693 coronavirus cases were reported over the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Health said in its update. The Covid positivity ratio stood at 3.28%.

Headlines at 12 noon: Zhob accident, Karachi rain, GLOF threat in Gilgit, loadshedding

At least 19 people died and 14 others were wounded in an accident in Zhob’s Sherani district. It happened when a Quetta-bound passenger van plunged into a ditch. PM Shehbaz has directed Balochistan CM Bizenjo to provide immediate medical aid to injured people.

The patience of people in Karachi is beginning to wear very thin as the city is yet to receive rain under the monsoon spell expected to fall from July 2 to 5. The Met Office has forecasted that the first spell of the monsoon will intensify on Sunday.

The possible impact of rain is urban flooding in Karachi, according to the Met Office. Showers are also expected in Balochistan, Islamabad, Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

With the change in weather, some of the glaciers in Gilgit Baltistan have started to melt. The water flow in the Hussainabad drain increased due to the melting of the Shisper glacier.

People in Karachi have complained about the unannounced loadshedding despite the release of an hours-long power outage schedule by the regulator. The country was facing a shortfall of more than 7,000MW.

The coronavirus cases were increasing in the country as two people died over the last 24 hours, the National Institute of Health said in a tweet.

Punjab CM Hamza Shehbaz has announced his decision to end the early market closure restriction till July 9. From July 11, markets and shops would again follow the previous timing.

PTI leader Fayyazul Hassan Chohan has described the leak of apparent audio of former first lady Bushra Bibi as an “un-Islamic and against ethics” action. He said that only one authority has the audio and video of people but did not name it.

People throng cattle markets ahead of Eidul Adha. They complain about the high rates of animals.

Two teenagers were killed and one was injured in a shooting in Houston, Texas, according to police. The incident took place during a party. Police have launched an investigation.

Fans remember singer Alam Lohar on the latter’s 43rd death anniversary. He was also awarded the Medal of Excellence award for his artistic services.

Headlines at 8am: Covid cases, Karachi monsoon, assault on Ayaz Amir

At least four people died because of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the National Institute of Health said as Pakistan tries to stem the spread of the virus.

People of Karachi and other parts of Sindh should “brace for the impact” as the province was likely to receive torrential rains on Saturday (today), according to the Met Office. Rain-thundershower with heavy to very heavy falls are also expected in Balochistan.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in southern Iran early on Saturday killed at least five people, state media reported. The area was also hit later by two strong quakes of up to 6.3-magnitude.

Unidentified men assaulted senior journalist Ayaz Amir in Lahore on Friday night when he was going home after a programme, the journalist said in a statement to Dunya News.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident and directed the Punjab chief minister to conduct an investigation into the incident.

The Punjab crisis was apparently resolved on Friday after the Supreme Court ruling that the election for the chief minister would be held on July 22. Both the parties agreed on keeping Hamza Shehbaz as the chief minister till the next election.

The apex court order would bring an end to the crisis-like situation in Punjab, CM Hamza said. Assembly Speaker Parvez Elahi said their demands were met and the House session would be held as per the rules.

PTI would hold a rally in Islamabad’s Parade Ground on Saturday (today) against inflation and rising petroleum product prices.

PM Shehbaz said that the loadshedding would end but not when. He accused the former government of prevailing issues.

The Indian Supreme Court has remarked that BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who made anti-Islam remarks, should apologise to the whole nation.

The flight operations in Paris, France were suspended after the staff went on strike. They have demanded a 300 Euros increase in their salaries.

Headlines at 8am: Petrol’s another jump, Covid, recount of votes in Punjab CM election

Petrol has become more expensive as the government again increased its price by Rs14 per litre, bringing the new price near to 250. At least Rs99 have been increased in the petrol price over a month. People have rejected such an increase.

Like their previous rhetoric, the coalition government blames the PTI for such a decision. The Imran-led government had broken its agreement with the IMF, finance czar Miftah Ismail said. The development comes against the backdrop of a fall in crude oil prices in the global market.

At least 694 cases of coronavirus were reported over the last 24 hours, according to the National Institute of Health. The Covid positivity rate stood at 3.93%.

The Punjab Assembly would meet on Friday (today) again for the recount of votes for the election held for the chief minister on April 16, excluding the 25 votes of PTI dissidents, as per the Lahore court orders. Hamza had informed about the “numbers game” in the assembly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz in a phone call.

PTI chief Imran Khan has decided to move the Supreme Court against the LHC decision. He has contended the candidacy of Hamza as the CM.

Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has accused the former premier of doing “revenge politics” to hide the latter’s apparent failures.

Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa has discussed matters pertaining to defence and security with the Qatari emir during a visit to the gulf country.

The new rain system has entered Pakistan, bringing pleasant weather to Islamabad, Murree, Rawalpindi, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
