Trump hails Makkah defence pact as ‘big, bold’ step for regional security

US President Donald Trump has welcomed the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, describing it as a major step towards strengthening regional security.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said he was “very happy” that the three countries had finally signed the agreement.

The US president said the pact demonstrated that Middle Eastern countries were moving closer together and would be able to strengthen their ability to defend themselves.

“Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement,” Trump said in his post.

Trump congratulated the leadership of the three countries, describing the pact as a “BIG, BOLD, AND IMPORTANT FIRST STEP — WOW!”

Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement on August 7, establishing a framework for closer defence and military cooperation.

The agreement was signed at Al Safa Palace in Makkah, creating a trilateral framework for collective defence and expanded military and security cooperation.

The agreement was signed by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all three, establishing a mutual defence commitment.

The agreement also aims to enhance military cooperation, strengthen collective deterrence and build on the countries’ longstanding bilateral defence and security ties.

Pakistan has emphasised that the agreement is defensive in nature and does not constitute the creation of a military axis or a sectarian or religious bloc.
